Spaghetti dinner funds to help school in Cambodia

The high school is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner to benefit the Milton High School of Cambodia. The dinner is scheduled to be held Saturday, March 13 in the school’s cafeteria from 4-6 p.m. Tickets are $6.
“Every two years we are responsible to give $2,500 to the school in Cambodia for the upkeep of it,” said History Teacher Mrs. Kellie Brouse. According to her, she is giving one bonus point in her history class for each ticket that her students sell. For every five tickets you sell, you will also have a chance to win fifty dollars in cash, she added.

“It’s an ongoing commitment,” said History Teacher Mr. Mike Conn. “We can’t just forget the kids in Cambodia.”

According to Mr. Conn, the Milton High School of Cambodia was finished in 2008. Since then the number of students attending has doubled from 140 students to around 300, he added.

“They’re in need of more classrooms,” Mr. Conn said. He added that the school only has three rooms.

“I’m glad we built the school in Cambodia. It was awesome to visit, and it meant everything,” said Mrs. Brouse.

“When my daughter and I visited Cambodia, I saw that there was something unique about it. There was just something about the kids there. I knew I had to do something to help them,” said Mr. Conn.

According to Mr. Conn, he worked with the American Association for Cambodia which is based in Tokyo, while building the school.
“The idea of the spaghetti dinner was thought up by Mrs. Brouse, Student Council, and Team Cambodia last year, so we decided it would be a good fundraiser again this year,” said Mr. Conn. He added that they fundraised over $30,000 to build the school in the 07-08 school year.

“I’d like to continue to provide educational opportunities for Cambodia and break the cycle of violence and poverty in the country,” said Mr. Conn.

Mr. Conn said that he’d like to take a trip to Cambodia again, although the trip he scheduled for next year had to be cancelled because not enough students chose to sign up.

“My advice for young people is to do something. Find out needs, get involved, and do volunteer work. Everyone can do something. You should give something back,” said Mr. Conn.
