Dear Milton Area School District Parents and Guardians,
The peak of the cold and flu season is upon us. With that said, we have seen an increase in illnesses among our students in the district, including the common cold, stomach viruses, influenza, and strep throat during the winter months. We were also made aware of two confirmed cases of pinworms in the district.
Pinworms are an intestinal roundworm spread through direct contact with contaminated surfaces, clothing, and unwashed hands. Please contact your family healthcare provider if you notice signs of illness in your child including persistent itching, trouble sleeping, or stomach discomfort. Treatment requires medication available only with a prescription.
While not uncommon in school settings, we want to ensure families have the necessary information to help prevent the spread of infections. We encourage students and families to practice universal precautions to prevent the spread of illnesses, including pinworms, by practicing good hygiene including:
• Frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the restroom.
• Keeping fingernails trimmed and discouraging nail-biting.
• Regular washing of bedding, pajamas, and undergarments in hot water.
• Reminding children to avoid sharing personal items such as clothing and hats.
• Keeping children home if they have a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting and ensuring they are symptom free for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
Our priority is to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment. In addition to our regular cleanings that occur, we schedule additional cleanings during this time of year to combat these issues. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us minimize the spread of illnesses. Please don't hesitate to contact the nurse or administration by calling 570-742-7614 if you have any questions. You may also visit the www.cdc.gov or www.pa .gov/agencies/health for more information regarding many of these illnesses.
Sincerely,
Dr. John Bickhart, Superintendent of Schools
